It’s that time again—new backpacks, sharpened pencils, and a fresh start for Katy students all across town. And if your child is heading into the school year with braces, there are a few extra things you’ll want to pack, prep, and plan for.
At Bright Braces, we know that juggling school schedules and orthodontic care can feel like a lot. That’s why we’ve put together this friendly, easy-to-follow braces checklist to help your family stay on track—and keep those smiles healthy, happy, and ready for picture day.
Whether your kiddo is new to braces or already a seasoned pro, this back-to-school guide is full of helpful reminders tailored just for Katy families.
1. Create a Braces Care Kit for Their Backpack
Think of this as their little emergency smile kit—something they can tuck in a pencil pouch or small zip bag.
Include:
Orthodontic wax (for pokey wires)
Travel toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste
Floss picks or interdental brushes
Extra rubber bands (if they wear them)
Small mirror
Lip balm (those lips can get dry!)
Compact container to hold a popped bracket or broken piece until they get home
Bright Tip: Keep a backup kit in your car or the nurse’s office, just in case!
2. Review Lunch Options (and What to Skip!)
School lunches and cafeteria snacks can be tricky with braces. Crunchy, sticky, or chewy foods can damage wires and brackets.
Braces-safe lunch ideas:
Soft sandwiches (PB&J, deli meats, egg salad)
Yogurt, pudding, or applesauce
Cheese cubes and soft fruits like bananas or berries
Cooked pasta or rice in a thermos
Cut-up veggies (steamed is even better!)
Foods to avoid:
Hard chips or popcorn
Raw carrots or whole apples (unless sliced thin)
Sticky candies or gum
Nuts or granola bars
Bright Tip: Pack a water bottle! Hydration keeps everything cleaner and reduces sugar sitting on those brackets.
3. Mark Your Calendar with Appointment Dates
Between football games, band practice, and test days, it’s easy to forget an orthodontic visit. Sync your Bright Braces appointments with your school calendar or phone reminders.
Bright Tip: We offer flexible scheduling, and we’re happy to work around school hours and extracurriculars.
4. Talk to Coaches, Teachers, and the School Nurse
If your child plays sports or is involved in activities, make sure their coaches know about their braces.
Mouthguards are a must for contact sports!
Let the nurse know your child has braces in case of an emergency or discomfort.
If they’re using rubber bands, it’s helpful for teachers to understand they may need to remove or reapply them discreetly.
5. Set a Daily Hygiene Routine
During the school day, brushing isn’t always easy—but morning and night brushing should be non-negotiable.
Encourage:
Brushing for 2 full minutes before school and before bed
Flossing at least once a day (floss threaders or a water flosser help!)
Rinsing with water after snacks or lunch if brushing isn’t an option
Bright Bonus: Use a plaque disclosing tablet once a week at home—it turns leftover plaque a bright color so they can see how they’re doing!
6. Keep Communication Open
The school year brings new stressors—tests, social stuff, and more. If your child is feeling self-conscious about their braces, remind them it’s a short season that leads to a lifetime of confidence.
And if anything breaks, rubs, or causes discomfort, we’re just a call away.
Bright Reminder: It’s totally normal to feel nervous or frustrated sometimes with braces. We’re here to cheer your kiddo on, every step of the way.
Bonus Tips for Katy Families
