Smile for a Lifetime
Dr. David Bright takes great pleasure in connecting with and giving back to our Katy-area communities. Bright Orthodontics regularly holds contests and local events for our patients as well as offering a Lamar ISD and Katy ISD scholarship program for seniors graduating from area high schools.
Dr. Bright feels most proud, however, of his involvement with the Smile for a Lifetime Foundation.
This organization provides necessary orthodontic care for children who would otherwise not receive it, typically due to financial issues. Dr. Bright sponsors the local chapter, Bright Smile, Bright Future, which is one of 16 chapters in the state of Texas.

About Smile for a Lifetime
The Smile for a Lifetime Foundation, a charitable, non-profit organization, was founded in 2008 with the goal of helping kids facing financial challenges get the orthodontic treatment they need. As of 2014, the organization had 165 chapters all across the United States and in four Canadian provinces.
Each chapter has a local Board of Directors, which goes through applications and awards scholarships to the patients who will receive treatment. Dr. Bright heads the Board of Directors for the Katy, TX chapter, which commits to providing scholarships to help at least six young people receive the orthodontic treatment they need each year.
Smile for a Lifetime sponsors the orthodontic treatment of hundreds of children between the ages of 11 and 18 every year, with hopes of improving their self-confidence and instilling a sense of hope in them. All sponsorships come from generous donations and fundraising activities, such as online auctions.
How the Program Works
If you live in the Katy area, you can apply with Dr. Bright’s chapter by visiting our Smile for a Lifetime page. Applicants for scholarships from Smile for a Lifetime can expect a very competitive process.
If you are from area outside the area, you can visit the Smile for a Lifetime website to start the application process with a chapter in your area.
Note that you must reside in the participating orthodontist’s area of service, must currently attend school, and have a positive attitude.
Applicants must also agree to make a commitment to follow their orthodontic treatment plan and attend all required appointments with the doctor. The foundation also strongly encourages applicants to show involvement and leadership in extracurricular activities.
As part of your application, you will be asked to upload two reference letters which can come from a teacher, relative, dentist, or community leader who knows the applicant well. You will also need to include a copy of their most recent transcript or report card, and a headshot showing a clear view of the child’s teeth.
Financial need must be demonstrated by submission of official documents such as tax returns.
Finally, the applicant must show a significant need for orthodontic treatment. Once the applicant has submitted all required forms and information, Dr. Bright will confirm the need for orthodontics by performing a pre-screening exam at no cost to the applicant.
The foundation accepts applications year round. The board of directors of most chapters meet two to four times a year to review applications. Applicants may contact Dr. Bright to find out when the local chapter’s board meets.
